285 Lafayette Street was built in 1886 as the Hawley & Hoops chocolate factory. In 1999, a rooftop addition was added and the building was converted to condos. Today, the open-floor lofts in a prime Nolita location are a celebrity magnet; David Bowie bought the penthouse in 1999 (his widow Iman still lives there), and Courtney Love and Ian Schrager are also former residents. But you don’t have to be a star to appreciate the colorful, modern design of this three-bedroom unit, currently renting furnished for $20,000 a month. Another added bonus is that the Soho branch of the New York Public Library is in the base of the building.
The 3,175-square-foot home has original posts and beams, reclaimed oak flooring, whitewashed brick walls, and modern wood paneling. The 38’x26’ corner living room overlooks Mulberry Street and St. Michael’s Chapel. Highlights of the furnishings here include an oversized, Poltrona Frau blue leather tufted sofa, Robsjohn Gibbings chairs, and a pair of low mid-century modern coffee tables. Throughout the home are Nepalese and Turkish rugs.
The dining and living areas are separated by a “double-sided wood and brass custom cabinet with a concealed flat-screen television.” A custom lacquered dining table goes well with the mid-century velvet dining chairs and BBDW ceramic chandelier.
The contemporary open kitchen comes complete with tableware, glassware, and everything you need for cooking and serving. There’s a Sub-zero fridge, Miele dishwasher, Lacanche six-burner French stove, farmhouse sink, and an in-sink disposal. The custom cabinetry has lined sliding storage drawers and all the counters are poured and sealed concrete, one of which extends into a table for four.
All of the bedrooms have en-suite limestone bathrooms.
The master overlooks the adjacent Puck Building and boasts a 12’x5′ walk-in closet/dressing area and a five-piece bathroom.
Twice-weekly housekeeping is included in the rent, but no pets are allowed. Building amenities include a 24-hour concierge and a landscaped roof terrace with lounge chairs and dining tables, a grill, and an outdoor shower.
