Though Mark Rothko is best known for having a studio down on the Bowery, at the end of his life, he lived in a prestigious townhouse on the Upper East Side, where he put a studio on the top floor. The Queen Anne-style home was built in1889 by C. Abbott French & Co. Rothko owned the townhouse at the time of his suicide in 1970. According to a New York Times article, the home became part of a debate over his will, since it contained 44 of his paintings.
