Apply for 160 affordable units at Bedford Union Armory complex in Crown Heights, from $465/month

Applications are now being accepted for 160 affordable units at a new rental in the Bedford Union Armory redevelopment in Brooklyn. Located at 1101 President Street in Crown Heights, the building offers residents brand new units and a prime location near Prospect Park. New Yorkers earning 30, 40, 50, and 60 percent of the area median income, or between $18,515 for a single person and $99,300 for a household of seven, are eligible to apply for the apartments, which range from $465/month studios to $1,841/month three bedrooms.

The new building is part of the Bedford Union Armory redevelopment in Crown Heights, which transformed the former military complex into a mixed-use development with hundreds of affordable housing units. Last year, the city opened the Major R. Owens Health & Wellness Community Center, a 60,000-square-foot community building with an indoor swimming pool, three basketball courts, dance studios, and space for local nonprofit organizations.
The former military complex was designed in 1903 by Pilcher and Tachau for use by the U.S. Army’s Cavalry Troop C. The development contained office space, training space, equipment storage, horse stables, a rifle range, and a swim tank. The complex was decommissioned for military use in 2013, after which New York City took it over with the intent of redeveloping it for community usage.
Designed by Marvel, 1101 President Street will rise 15 stories and contain 355 total apartments. It’s the larger of the two residential buildings within the project, with the smaller, located at 1089 President Street, comprised of 60 units. The housing lottery for 1089 President launched last year, with available apartments priced from $367/month studios to $1,472/month three-bedrooms.
Residents will have access to amenities like in-unit laundry, dishwashers, bike storage lockers, a gymnasium, a recreation room, a business center, concierge service, and a rooftop terrace.
Qualifying New Yorkers can apply for the affordable units until September 19, 2022. Fifty percent of the units are set aside for residents of Brooklyn Community District 9.
