One of the most distinctive homes in the Hudson Valley is back on the market. Surrounded by nearly 46 acres with views of the Catskills, the “Sleeve House” is an ultra-contemporary home created as two long volumes, a smaller one “sleeved” into a larger one, which allows for separate public and private spaces. Designed by Adam Dayem’s Actual/Office Architects, the three-bedroom home sits on a sloped hill and is wrapped in charred wood of varying thickness, a nod to the rural area’s historic barns and agricultural buildings. 6sqft first wrote about this home when it was listed for $2,100,000 in 2017. Now it’s available again, this time for $2,275,000.
Constructed in 2017, the home was built with sustainability in mind, with the use of energy-efficient design elements like a solar collection system, triple glazed windows, and radiant heating. The exterior features Accoya wood “skin,” charred by a Japanese finishing technique called “shou sugi ban” which leaves the wood resistant to rot.
The interior space between the inner and outer volumes includes the entry gallery, a kitchen, a stepped-up dining room, and a living room with a sloping wall of glass, high ceilings, and a suspended wood-burning fireplace.
Seen as more intimate is the inner volume, where you’ll find three bedrooms and two baths. Unlike the exposed concrete and charred wood seen between inner and outer volumes, this space features “softer” materials like carpeting and sheet-rocked walls, as the listing describes. Two of the bedrooms boast private balconies.
According to the architect, as 6sqft previously reported, “The experience of passing from these hard, large-scale spaces into the interior of the inner volume is designed to be like entering a different world.”
