Historic upstate charmer once owned by Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier asks $5.5M
After filming “Gone with the Wind,” Vivien Leigh lived with husband Laurence Olivier in this charming Greek Revival home in Palisades, New York, and the Post reports that it’s now on the market for $4.45 million. Built in the 1820s, it’s known as the Captain John House and is located in the upscale hamlet of Snedens Landing, which the couple must really have loved since they also lived in another home here that called Orson Welles and John Steinbeck residents, too.
The 5,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home at 20 Washington Spring Road is in the town’s former boatyard/ferry district. The quaint exterior has lovely decorative balustrades on its two levels of porches and stairs.
Inside, historic details include six working fireplaces, white-washed stone walls, hand-hewn beams, and panel doors.
The living room also has a gas-fired wood stove and concealed wet bar.
The yard is perhaps the most magical with a pool that overlooks the George Washington Spring, an old brick smokehouse, a gazebo with river views and a sandstone fireplace, brick paths, and a secret garden with stone bench.
Snedens Landing has quite the celebrity cache. Both actresses Hayden Panettiere and Angelina Jolie grew up here, and, in addition to the aforementioned roster that resided at Leigh and Olivier’s other home, past and presents residents include Mikhail Baryshnikov, Al Pacino, Lorraine Bracco, Bill Murray, and Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke.
