Fashion Stylist Scott Newkirk Goes Unplugged in His 14×14 Rough-Hewn Cabin
For many city dwellers bogged down by the hustle and bustle of everyday life, vacations are spent offline in far-away places, disconnected from technology and reconnected to nature. But fashion and interior stylist Scott Newkirk proves you don’t have to go that far to have your own unplugged woodland dream.
Located in Yulan, New York, just 90 miles northwest of NYC, Newkirk’s charming wooden cabin is a mere 14×14 feet and is made entirely from salvaged and reclaimed pieces of wood.
Inspired by the 1973 eco-classic Handmade Houses: A Guide to the Woodbutcher’s Art, Newkirk decided to build his own small, off-grid cabin in the woods. It took him two years to realize his dream, as he couldn’t find a builder who understood his simple, rough-hewn look; they all tried to make the dwelling look smooth and finished. But once his vision was realized, and the cabin was constructed entirely from salvaged and reclaimed materials, this 14×14-foot woodland retreat provided Newkirk with his perfect escape.
The cabin’s stunning interiors are full of charmingly simple details like furniture made from driftwood, organic sculptures everywhere, windows that frame the forest, and an outdoor shower and deck. Perfect for going off the grid, it has no running water or electricity, no TV, and definitely no computer–and if Scott wants to take a bath, he has to visit the nearby brook. This rough-hewn wooden cabin is certainly the place to be after dealing with the stresses and demands of the NYC fashion world.
