Gawker founder Nick Denton can’t pay mortgage on Soho condo, needs renter approved
If you visit Gawker.com today, you’ll see a final farewell that simply says “F— It,” leading up to Univision’s takeover of the media company later this month. But Gawker Media founder Nick Denton isn’t so quick to throw in the towel in every aspect of his struggling empire; according to the Post, he’s found a renter for who will fork over $12,500 a month for his $4.2 million Soho condo (in the same building where Kelly Ripa sold her penthouse at a $4.5 million discount).
After publishing a sex video of him, Gawker was notoriously sued by Hulk Hogan, who won a $140 million settlement against the company, forcing Denton to file bankruptcy since he’s personally liable for $10 million. So in May, he put his apartment at 76 Crosby Street on the market for $15,000 a month, the cost of his monthly mortgage payment that he now can’t make, along with $3,400 in condo fees. But in order for the deal to go through, Denton needs a bankruptcy judge to approve the lease.
The 2,556-square-foot condo has two bedrooms, 12-foot ceilings, a private entrance on Spring Street, and spectacular south- and east-facing views from its corner location. It also boasts original cast iron columns and wood ceiling beams.
The living/dining room has seven tall windows lined with built-in shelves and offering window seats. In the kitchen, there’s a six-burner Viking stove, wine cooler, double sink, double oven, and a stainless steel island that can seat five.
The master suite has a large square teak Japanese soaking tub, two walk-in closets, and a separate reading area. The second bedroom can serve as a den or media room and has its own bathroom, along with a washer/dryer nearby.
Though the $12,500 a mont rent is less than what Denton will still owe, Univision is reportedly paying him $16,666 a month to not start a rival company. But the Post reports that “the unnamed potential tenant is losing patience after already pushing back an Aug. 1 move-in date to give Denton space to handle the Gawker sale.”
