Design Firm Décor Aid Helps a Soho Couple Turn an Outdated Duplex Into a Modern Multitasking Home

While the company’s name might sound like a designers’ fund-raising rock concert, the method offered by design firm Décor Aid simplifies renovation and redecorating for clients like the Soho resident who needed to hit refresh on the downtown Manhattan apartment that serves so many functions for himself and his girlfriend–and their four-legged companion. The stale duplex emerged as a stylish and user-friendly home base, office and entertaining space with the help of these savvy and straight-shooting design pros.

The couple were adamant about the kind of style and level of comfort they expected from their home despite the usual challenging space constraints found in New York City apartments.

The couple entertain frequently, so the home’s lower level became a gracious entertaining space with the kitchen, dining, and living areas providing a good flow between them. A chandelier serves as lighting, art and the focal point of dramatic double-height ceilings above. Iron railings on the staircase in the center of the living area were paired with an iron and cement fireplace.

The firm designed a walnut bar that does multiple duty as storage, a buffet and, of course, a bar. Two refrigerators hold wine and other beverages.

In the living room a large, deep sofa–custom-made for the clients–provides serious chill space for all residents. An area rug adds an element of sophistication.

For a modern, loft-like feeling, an internal window was built into the upstairs bedroom; the window overlooks the lower level and lets in sunlight from the living area. The couple wanted a bit of a “moody vibe,” which was created by using a grey textured wall covering throughout.

The baths are a showcase of on-trend industrial chic, including an iron-and-glass shower, white subway tiles and brass accents paired with stylish black.

Décor-aid design services offer an innovative spin on the role of the interior design professional.
