Alan Cumming Lists Charming, Quirky East Village Home for $2.2M

“The Good Wife” star Alan Cumming is selling the East Village apartment that stole his heart when the Scottish-born actor first saw it back in 2005. Listed for $2.2 million, the four-bedroom co-op at 297 East 10th Street overlooking Tompkins Square Park definitely looks like the kind of place you could call home for at least a few years, a rare thing in the otherwise great neighborhood. The Wall Street Journal reports that Cumming and husband Grant Shaffer have been renovating a nearby 19th-century townhouse that they bought in 2013 for $4.65 million, and the time seemed right to part with this cozy co-op.

There really is such a thing as East Village charm, and though it’s sometimes used ironically, it’s fair to say this is a version of the real thing. Understated and smart, it’s a definitely a home, not a place to rent out from your boardroom in Beijing. The Emmy-nominated actor, who plays semi-lovable spin-weasel Eli Gold on the weekly law drama which just saw its final episode, bought the apartment for $1.695M in 2005.

The full-floor (walk-up) apartment overlooking one of the city’s coolest parks boasts three exposures for tons of sunlight and park views through oversized windows. Pre-war details are in evidence, though the space has been upgraded with modern style; you’ll find wide-plank hardwood floors, architectural moldings and beautiful built-ins.

Enter through the foyer into a gracious living and dining area with north and south exposures and treetop views. Highlights include a wall of built-ins and an original wood-burning fireplace with a carved wooden mantel. Cumming, who won a Tony award in 1998 for his role in “Cabaret,” told WSJ that the couple had done some renovations but maintained much of the original detail.

The open, renovated kitchen gives you park views, stainless steel countertops and plenty of storage.

On the other side of the apartment are a full bath and four sunny bedrooms. Though the corner master suite is spacious and has ample closet space, the other bedrooms are narrow enough make it seem like a great idea to use the space as a two-bedroom with a large walk-in closet and an office. Especially since there’s only one bath.

The charming brick building in the East 10th Street Historic District couldn’t be in a better spot for dining, boutique shopping, nightlife–or dog owning, given the great dog runs in the park and the pet-friendly nature of the co-op.
