Live in a Lofty Triplex Apartment at a Former 1880s Firehouse for $4,500/Month
Before 735 Dean Street was anybody’s home, it was the post of Engine Company 219, who moved in when the firehouse was built in 1880. The historic structure in Prospect Heights has since been converted to apartments, one of which is this 1,400-square-foot triplex being offered for rent. From the inside, though, you wouldn’t guess this was in an old fire station; it looks like your typical Brooklyn loft.
The triplex is essentially carved out of the firehouse building, with lofted floors allowing for ceiling heights to reach 27 feet. The first level of the apartment is a rec room, the second is an open living room, dining room and kitchen, and the top loft has the sleeping area plus a walk-in closet. Every floor comes with a bathroom.
That massive front window was originally the doorway and now it is the main source of sunlight for the apartment—there are also custom shades if you want a little privacy.
The open eat-in kitchen is decked out with Caesar stone countertops and Danish white oak cabinetry. It looks straight out onto the firehouse window.
Who wouldn’t love to sleep perched at the top of an old fire station? This upper loft has been ingeniously built out with a walk-in closet, storage space and a full bathroom. We love the built-in bookshelves at the top of the stairs. And the way the floors are configured, you can look down from here to the first floor. Now if only there was a fire pole to take you all the way down!
