Wood Detailing Galore, and an Outdoor Bathtub, at This Prewar Penthouse in Greenwich Village
This prewar duplex penthouse comes from the Greenwich Village co-op at 49 West 9th Street, quite a beautiful brick and limestone building equidistance from Washington Square Park and Union Square. The $2.75 million apartment is around 1,000 square feet over two floors, with one bedroom and two bathrooms. It’s also brimming with wood detailing and decked out with lots of private outdoor space — home to both an outdoor shower and yes, a bathtub. If you’re a fan of elegant, classic New York co-ops (that happen not to be in the Upper West or Upper East Sides) this one will make your day.
It’s a somewhat unusual layout that’s divided over two floors. You walk right into the kitchen, which then leads you into the great room on the main floor. The great room is lined with windows and also boasts a wood-burning fireplace. And throughout the entire floor there are wide-plank walnut floors, ceiling beams and wood finishes just about wherever you’d look. You’d be forgiven for thinking these are shots of a cabin in Aspen.
There’s a tucked-away library that keeps going with the wood details. That wall of built-in bookshelves and shelving is just beautiful, and there’s more well-designed storage underneath the widows. Cool feature of this room: a hidden, drop-down movie screen.
The upstairs bedroom ditches the wood theme and instead looks bright and modern. The historic casement windows remain intact and look out onto the apartment’s private garden. The master bathroom comes with a windowed rain shower that’s also lit by a skylight.
There are two outdoor spaces, a terrace outside the master bedroom and an upper terrace above it. Both of them come with some fun, unexpected amenities that include a fire pit and outdoor shower on the lower terrace and an outdoor tub on the upper one. Yes, an outdoor bathtub. The listing photos don’t show it up close so we don’t know exactly how it’s set up, but we really wouldn’t mind taking a bath with views of Greenwich Village below. Would you?
