Maisonette Meets Loft in This Central Williamsburg Duplex Asking $5,500 a Month
This duplex apartment at the Sophia Lofts at 234 North Ninth Street, a former bakery converted to 11 loft residences in 2007, has a private entrance on Williamsburg’s bustling crossroads of Roebling Street. You can come and go as you like from your own slice of prime ‘burg, a 1,480 square-foot duplex that will put you right in the middle of where all the action is, for $5,500 a month. The interiors are loft all the way, though there are plenty of custom comforts and chic additions that give the classic converted space a distinct modern personality.
It’s a part of central Williamsburg that’s packed to capacity with solid low-rise warehouse buildings that have been converted to luxury homes, alternating with new construction apartment buildings, with more still on the rise. Yet the streets here manage to retain a feeling that important and creative things are happening behind doorways and storefronts, as residents from all (stylish) walks of life scurry and loiter with equal intensity.
This one-bedroom duplex with “home office area” is currently being used as a two-bedroom. There’s a full bath on each floor. It’s definitely an unconventional space: A soaring ceiling, exposed brick and floor-to-ceiling windows forgive a multitude of shortcomings, as do the steel doors, original timber beams and columns, and lovely refinished grey pickled maple wood flooring you’ll find in the top-level living room, kitchen and dining area. The bright minimalist white-and-wood loft kitchen rocks (apparently, since it’s not visible here) a barn siding wall-mounted wine rack in addition to its Miele dishwasher, Jenn-Air vented range and ceramic subway tile backsplash. There’s lots of closet and storage space, too.
On the way downstairs is a foyer currently serving as a cool little office nook. Modern comforts complement historic loft details: You’ll get custom lighting, a custom bamboo walk-in California closet and kitchen pantry, central heat and air, and an ADT home security system.
Downstairs is a spacious bedroom with white brick and a high beamed ceiling. A second room is being used as a bedroom but could be a home office–no windows but cozy and bright all the same. This is where you’ll find the washer/dryer and lots of closet space. The loft can be rented furnished, (we assume with the cool modern mix seen here), or unfurnished.
Something you definitely want in a social and ideally situated neighborhood like this one: There’s a shared furnished outdoor space on the rooftop. McCarren Park is next door and the East River waterfront is a few blocks away. And that location, just blocks from the Bedford L stop getting you to either Bushwick or Union Square in minutes, is everything the East Village used to be.
