Big Price Drop at This Renovated Five-Story, Upper West Side Townhouse
The pricing over the years at 33 West 71st Street, located on the Upper West Side near Central Park West, is like reading the dramatic play, The Crazy Price Tags of New York. The historic townhouse sold in 1996 for $770,000, although back then it looks like the residence was chopped up into rental units. At some point, it was renovated back into a single family and the price tag started to skyrocket. It was listed in 2008 for $5.3 million, then in 2012 for $7.5 million. It sold in 2013 for $6.225 million and then was quickly listed again in 2014 for $18.5 million after the latest renovation. That price was lowered to $16.495 million this summer, and then quickly lowered again to $14.995 million. Got all that? Because now it’s on the market with a price cut to $12.995 million, or you can rent it for $40,000 a month.
The home itself boasts an intricate, historic facade but is totally gut renovated inside. Fancy upgrades — which account for the high pricing — include an elevator that runs through all five floors, a roof terrace with a hot tub, and lots of terrace space. The listing calls this renovation a combo of “restored old world details seamlessly mixed with a contemporary aesthetic.” Indeed, it’s got a very modern aesthetic, with recessed lighting along the 12-foot ceilings, new windows and oak flooring and custom moldings. Other upgrades include central air and heat, radiant heat floors in all the bathrooms, wiring for electric blinds and fancy smart home technology. There is one old school luxury included: a dumb waiter.
A spiral staircase from the parlor floor leads you down to the kitchen on the garden floor, but remember there’s also an elevator at your disposal here! The kitchen, as you might guess, has been sleekly renovated and includes a large breakfast bar.
The massive home holds a total of six bedrooms on the second, third and fourth floors not to mention seven and a half bathrooms. (Two of those bedrooms have either a balcony or terrace space.) The master bathroom and bedroom take up the entire second floor.
This bathroom is purely modern, with a glass shower and steam room and a tub that probably has great views of the block.
Even the basement has been fully renovated, and the elevator goes down here, too, where you’ve got a large wine cellar, rec room, full bathroom and a laundry room.
Finally, there’s the plentiful outdoor space . There’s a backyard off the garden floor, a terrace off the parlor floor, a balcony off the third floor bedroom and a terrace off the fourth floor bedroom. The fifth floor roof terrace boasts a BBQ and wet bar area, a deck, and yes, a hot tub from which you can view the surrounding rooftops of the Upper West Side. Once you get out of the hot tub, just hop in the elevator down to your fancy bathroom with radiant heat! What luxury.
