Studio DB’s Tribeca Penthouse Strikes the Perfect Balance of Beauty and Functionality

Tribeca has been a NYC hot spot for well over a decade and is home to one of the city’s most sought-after zip codes. Thanks to its large stock of lofts and historic architecture, the trendy ‘hood is chock full of drool-worthy real estate, and this classic penthouse is no exception. The home was renovated in 2014 by the design team at Studio DB, who set out to make the space both beautiful and functional for the homeowners’ growing family.

While there was plenty of square footage to work with both inside and out, the existing floor plan divided the space into several small rooms. To relieve the building from its cramped orientation, the interior was redesigned to facilitate an airy quality and now includes an open living room, dining room and kitchen.

The new open space is perfect for entertaining and is structurally and visually unified by the glazed mezzanine level and roof deck.

The kitchen was extended and now occupies the full width of the apartment. Its design was customized to cater to the home chef who takes cooking a bit more seriously. With the intention of finding a balance between functional, modern and traditional, the room features classic elements with a twist, including a marble hood surround and backsplash, open brass shelving, crisp white subway tile, a bar footrest, oak cabinets with mirrored glass, and a paneled refrigerator.

The team also worked with the interiors firm Studio Riga to design a custom built-in banquette for the dining area, transforming the previously awkward area into a more unified interior.

The bedrooms were relocated to the back of the apartment, a structural detail that also resulted in additional natural light and space for an extra bedroom and sizable dressing room.

The home features an elegant exterior rooftop that is also both beautiful and functional. The focus for this part of the house was to create a space that allowed for easy entertaining and maintenance.
