$13K Furnished Rental Is a Mix of All the Coolest Downtown Dwellings

December 18, 2015

The kitchen says Greenwich Village, the bedroom reads East Village, and the large living space is pure Soho loft. Located just south of Union Square and a few blocks from almost everything else in the universe, this good old fashioned “loft-style home” at 816 Broadway is the perfect mix of cool downtown dwellings.

Unless you’re seeking total peace and quiet (which rules out most of New York City) there isn’t much downside–other than the $13K a month rent–to moving right in to this hip, well-stocked apartment with the world just outside your door. This furnished home is available for six months or less (January-September); weekly cleaning and utilities are included in the rent.

The apartment has elements of at least several downtown idylls: The bright, cozy bohemia and walls of exposed brick you’d find in a charming East Village tenement atelier; the high ceilings, custom stainless-steel-and-butcher block kitchen and shiny wood floors of a renovated Soho or Tribeca loft; and lots of NYU students in every direction–always more part of Greenwich Village life than anyone will admit. And somehow the expensive grittiness of what used to be more of a pass-through zone has begun to seem almost quaint and nostalgic. The listing puts it this way: “Historic New York charm and chic rustic finishes run throughout this fully furnished home.”

It’s as perfect for someone with a romantic yen for the city in any of its various heydays as it is for someone seeking a taste of 21st century downtown Manhattan. Up one flight and down a long, narrow foyer, the two-bedroom apartment is anchored by a big open loft-style living/dining space filled with light from three big recessed windows. Beamed ceilings, hardwood floors, and plenty of brick are in evidence, as is a “playful, decorative mini piano.”

A massive-windowed eat-in kitchen offers industrial-chic stainless steel cabinets, wood-block countertops and a vented range hood. The auto-drip coffeemaker is a disappointment we can overlook.

The first (windowless, according to the floor plan) bedroom offers an elevated sleeping space with a connecting ladder above a room big enough for two full-sized beds; the second bedroom is a cozy, brick-walled affair.

The full bathroom (there’s also a powder room) has a deep soaking tub with a rain shower and glass doors. Built-in wood shelving, a closet and a washer/dryer keep things convenient and organized.

“Enjoy the best of the city within just steps of your front door,” is pretty much true, including the bit about Union Square Park with its beloved Greenmarket and just about every subway in the city stopping nearby.
