Former House & Garden Editor Lists Upper East Side Co-op for $4.75M
If you’re fan of the elegant, old-fashioned Upper East Side, pre-war co-ops and stylishly-decorated interiors, you can’t go wrong with this five-room, two-bedroom-plus home at 563 Park Avenue. The seller is the former editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure magazine (and before that, Condé Nast’s House & Garden, where she replaced Anna Wintour as EIC), Nancy Novogrod and her husband, John, an estate attorney; so we’d expect that show-house-worthy interiors are a given.
And we aren’t disappointed. There’s lots of beige, velvet, polished wood and artfully contrasted textiles, and plenty of genteel restraint. The home is in renovated move-in condition. Large windows offer eastern and southern exposures and look out over the neighborhood’s classic townhouses. A highlight is a magnificent, ultra-chic, almost-square corner library with a cozy working fireplace–it could easily be a third bedroom with living/dining room to spare (a little creative architecture could even yield a fourth bedroom).
A 19-by-36-foot living room boasts four large windows in a row along one length, 10-foot ceilings and another wood-burning fireplace.
The kitchen was recently renovated–it’s the most sleek and minimal here–though richly appointed with marble surfaces and high-end appliances–and is perfect for a roll-up-your-sleeves cook. The dining gallery is currently the apartment’s most colorful zone, with bright coral walls, contrasting trim and a contemporary glass “drop” chandelier.
Both of the home’s spacious bedrooms have en-suite baths and wood-burning fireplaces. Not especially chic (but very common in even the best pre-war co-ops) are through-wall air conditioners with individual thermostats in each room. The apartment was, however completely rewired for electric and sound, according to the listing.
An additional perk is a double-sized private storage room in the building. Nothing says “Upper East Side” so much as a Park Avenue address, and you’re also steps from Central Park, internationally-renowned shops and boutiques, plenty of casual and fine dining, food markets and much more.
