The Parlor Floor’s the Star at This Bed Stuy Rental, Asking $4,500 a Month

If you’ve got the option to rent a floor of a historic New York townhouse, you’ll always want the parlor floor. Originally designed to be the showcase of the home, this floor comes with big windows and the best light, a great layout and usually access to the backyard. This Bedford-Stuyvesant townhouse at 611 Macon Street now has a rental apartment available, for $4,500 a month, that covers both the parlor floor and floor above it. The home is indeed lovely, with some well-kept historic details and some renovations to make it feel like an “open concept space.”

Okay, so we’re not fans of the big yellow couch. But otherwise, the front of the parlor floor is decked out with an original fireplace mantel, a large pocket door, parquet floors, wall and ceiling moldings. Big front windows (with stained glass detailing!) bring in plenty of light.

Instead of separate living and dining areas, a renovation has opened this floor up and the dining table is directly behind the living room. This keeps the floor feeling spacious and bright.

A large doorway leads to the kitchen in the rear of the parlor floor. Details include polished concrete and corian countertops, a cooktop placed in the center island, a dishwasher, Sub Zero refrigerator, and custom cabinetry. Lighting in here, as well as the rest of the house, was designed by Michael Anastassiades.

Up the carved staircase is another floor of living space. Here, there are three bedrooms, including the master.

There’s no lack of historic detailing up here, either, with more decorative fireplaces and those great parquet floors. The master bedroom has its own walk-in closet and bathroom, and the master bathroom is decked out with a skylight, double sink and standing shower. The second bathroom is less modernized, with a restored claw foot tub. There’s also a washer and dryer up here for laundry days.

611 Macon is located on one of the brownstone-lined side streets of Bedford-Stuyvesant, about five blocks away from the Utica Avenue A/C trains. The neighborhood is known for townhouses like these: old, charming, well-kept and just a good solid place to call home.
