Cool Co-op Asks $2.195 Million in the Thomas English Muffin Building
The English muffin has a pretty notable history in New York City. In 1874, Samuel Bath Thomas–yes, that Thomas–left England to sell English muffins to the New York masses, and his recipe was a hit. For a long time, he baked underneath the Chelsea townhouse at 337 West 20th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues, which you can read all about here. But before he baked there, he got his start at another Chelsea building, at 161 9th Avenue. This very first New York bakery of his is now the site of the two-bedroom co-op on the market for $2.195 million. It’s a cool duplex space with an even cooler private garden.
Located in a landmarked building, the co-op has beautiful wood floors, whitewashed exposed brick and super high ceilings. On the main floor you’ve got a den (which could also be used as a bedroom), a powder room, and a master bedroom. On the lower floor there’s the kitchen, a room being used as a recording studio (which could be converted to an office, large pantry, or walk-in closet) and the living room. The living room comes outfitted with a wood-burning fireplace, and it comes as no surprise that the kitchen’s been renovated rather nicely, with marble walls, backsplash and flooring, stainless steel appliances and a mini wine fridge.
Here’s the cozy den space, which can double as the second bedroom. The listing says this room has been outfitted with “City Quiet windows” to keep noise on the down low. We’re digging those deep purple walls.
And a look into the master bedroom, which is also accented by a dark wall color and some fancy lighting. The windows in here overlook the unit’s private garden.
Not only is the apartment a duplex, so is the garden! This multi-level green space is landscaped and has an irrigation system set up. If you walk to the top, there’s a Buddha and some nice shade waiting for you. Who knew that the old Thomas English muffin home would be so Zen by 2015?
