Brooklyn Author Lists Whimsical Prospect Lefferts Gardens Townhouse for $1.85M

October 20, 2015

Isn’t it the dream of every aspiring novelist in Brooklyn to have a gorgeous townhouse to write in? Brooklyn-based author Emma Straub (of novels like “The Vacationers” and “Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures”) has lived the dream, in this lovely Prospect Lefferts Gardens limestone at 182 Rutland Road. The super-adorable house has been featured in places like Design Sponge and Apartment Therapy. On the latter, Straub characterized the design style as “Colorful and eclectic. Slightly goofy.” She and her husband Michael Fusco (together they run design studio M + E out of the house) bought it back in 2009 for $975,000. Today, it’s not so easy for a Brooklyn writer to afford a Brooklyn townhouse–it’s on the market for $1.85 million.

The three-story, 20-foot-wide limestone was built in 1910 and is part of the historic and landmarked Lefferts Manor enclave of the neighborhood. On the parlor level, a foyer and beautiful wooden pocket doors lead to the living room, which you can see is accented by bay windows, high ceilings and a really cool rug.

Deeper onto the parlor floor, the dining area is nice and wide. A wall separates it from the kitchen rather than having a completely open space. We like the breakfast bar area that the wall creates.

Kitchen details include soapstone counters and cherry cabinets. We also love the red zebra wallpaper and gallery wall leading upstairs. The upper level holds four bedrooms and a bathroom, although there aren’t photos to peek at in the listing.

As Apartment Therapy noted about this pad, “Art is hung everywhere, and there is plenty of space to sit, eat or get your creative juices flowing–including two big tables in the dining room and basement studio.” Pictured above is the basement studio, which manages to make a dark basement look bright and fun. This floor also includes a washer/dryer, separate guest room and a full bathroom.

182 Rutland Road, backyard, hammock

If you’re not already feeling a little jealous, this backyard may do the trick. There’s a custom deck, a brick patio, a treehouse and a hammock. (Note to all the backyards in NYC: add a hammock!) Outside or in, this looks like a very good home when it comes to inspiring creativity.
