This $17.5 Million Co-Op at the Dakota Has Gone Totally Mod!
While many of the apartments at The Dakota, the historic co-op building at 1 West 72nd Street on the Upper West Side, are dripping with historic detail, this one is an anomaly. The four-bedroom unit does retain many of the classic details of these famed apartments—12-foot ceilings, wood-burning fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling windows and grand, well-sized rooms. But it’s been significantly renovated with bold, modern design in the kitchen and bedrooms. To have a touch of modernism in one of the most iconic and historic apartment buildings of New York is going to cost you $17.5 million. The unit last sold in 2010, for $11.5 million.
The formal living and dining rooms are where you’re getting all that elegant historic detail. Another huge perk of being able to buy at the Dakota are the sprawling floor plans; this particular unit has a gallery room, a library and a huge dressing room in addition to the four bedrooms, living room and dining room.
Don’t feel depressed about the size of the closets at the Dakota—they almost rival the size of a New York City studio. This one’s off the master bedroom.
In the kitchen, you start to feel as if you’re in a different apartment. Gone is the dark wood and the fireplaces. In exchange, it’s a sleek glassy and silvery design with custom lighting and modern furniture. Just check out that insane wall of cabinets.
The master bedroom is also playing with modern design, although its still got its moldings, dark wood door frame and the wood floors.
As for the other bedrooms, you have a choice: funky or traditional? (Still, in both rooms you get a fireplace!)
And even the bathroom’s got some fun design. So what do you think—is this apartment all the better because it’s standing out from the typical Dakota apartment? Or do you think the units are best when they are maintained in total historic glory? The jury’s out on this one.
