There’s a Secret Bathhouse Modeled After Ancient Greco-Roman and Ottoman Traditions in Tribeca
We don’t always have enough free time to escape NYC as often as we’d like (or need). However, when we find ourselves desperate for some immediate R and R there are a few gems of tranquility hidden inside the walls of this concrete jungle. One breathtaking example is AIRE’s Ancient Bath House located right in Tribeca behind a very unassuming cast iron storefront (we didn’t know it existed either!). This sexy newcomer offers guests access to a suite of amenities including pools of hot, warm, cold and ice water; jet and salt baths; and a steamy hammam.
The fee for entry is a bit higher than similar places like Queens’ SpaCastle or the Lower East Side’s Russian and Turkish baths, but what you get in return may be worth the extra dough. Not only is this facility far more private than others (about 25 people per 90 minutes), its stunning design makes it easy to feel miles away from the bustling city streets. The baths were modeled after the Greco-roman and Ottoman rituals, and are lit by candles alone.
The facility was opened in May of 2012 by AIRE, a Spanish company with a chain of bath houses throughout Spain. This is their first North American offshoot.
The AIRE Group was born 15 years ago in Seville by an inspired group of friends and investors who wanted to replicate the tradition of ancient Greek and Roman bath houses in restored historic buildings.
