Mercer Street Loft by DHD Interiors Brings a Bit of Whimsy to a Classic Soho Space

After looking at a few projects from the talent over at DHD Interiors, we’re realizing that what draws us to the firm’s work is their ability to infuse an unexpected sense of whimsy into otherwise classic spaces, and their Mercer Street Loft is no exception. From the curious wall mural to the fanciful oversized chair in the living room, this Soho space surprises you when you least expect it.

DHD was commissioned by the client to create a home that “celebrates both classic, historical elements and modern twists.” They were also asked to incorporate art and the client’s “adventurous, eclectic tastes,” while maintaining original features like the hardwood floors, stripped cast iron columns, and tin ceilings.

The large, open living space is warmed up with vibrant area rugs and natural features like the weathered sandstone bench. Linear elements like the open book shelf and full wall of windows are contrasted by the eye-popping, curving chair. Since the unit is on a low floor, it receives little natural night. DHD mitigated that issue by installing half-walls to delineate the various rooms while still allowing light to pass through.

The spacious layout is perfect for entertaining, hence the 14-foot dining table. This is set against the curious wall mural, certainly a conversation piece, which was done by the client’s friend.

The master bedroom and bath was designed to feel a bit softer and warmer, achieved through the use of deep reds, plush fabrics, and a striking wood veneer wallpaper. The personalized chandelier over the tub, however, functions as the space’s unique component.
