RES4’s Beautiful Mountain Retreat Sits on Stilts for Privileged Views of the Catskills
The owners of this beautiful woodland dwelling have swapped the hustle and bustle of NYC for the sweeping views of the Catskill Mountains. Designed by Resolution: 4 Architecture, the Mountain Retreat was carefully crafted into its unique surroundings, partially resting on high concrete stilts to get the best views of the landscape. Combining warm cedar siding with cool gray concrete panels and glass, the stylish property takes full advantage of its picturesque mountain setting.
RES4’s Mountain Retreat sits on a five-acre rocky outcrop in Kerhonkson, New York. Its 1,800 square feet are divided into two levels, which beautifully mix a volume with warm cedar cladding and cool gray precast concrete panels at the front with big glass apertures.
To cause minimum impact on the ground and afford the best views from high up, the architects emplaced part of the property on concrete stilts, which also support the best part of the house: an elevated wooden deck that wraps the home around three of it sides, unfolding into a space for lounging, sunbathing, or just enjoying the fresh air and mountain views.
Right below the stilts, there’s plenty of space for parking and storing cars and bicycles. This also serves a shaded spot on hot summer days.
The entrance was placed right behind the cement board panels leading from the ground into the main living spaces. Inside, the ambience is bright and minimal, with bamboo flooring, custom-made cedar cabinets and big windows that welcome sunshine and allow for stunning views into the forest and mountaintops.
