Steven Harris-Designed West Village Townhouse Sells for $15M
We’re big fans of the work of Steven Harris Architects here at 6sqft, so it came as no surprise that this West Village townhouse that features the firm’s lovely designs sold for $15 million. According to city records released today, the seller of the home located at 156 West 13th Street is Candida Smith, curator and daughter of the late celebrated artist and sculptor David Smith.
The Greek Revival townhouse was built in 1846 for the estate of Peter Remsen, a member of a prominent Knickerbocker family. Steven Harris updated the home to include modern conveniences like an elevator and an industrial-sized kitchen, while retaining its historic charm and grandeur.
A street-level service entrance opens to the sleek kitchen, which was designed with the help of a chef. It features top-of-the-line appliances, crisp white open shelving and cabinetry, and warm wood floors. It opens to the backyard. Also on the ground level are a utilities bathroom with a steam shower and a guest bedroom/office.
The main level is highlighted by the grand staircase that wraps up to the second level. This level also retains classic Greek revival elements like crown moldings and detailed hardwood floors. Perfect for entertaining, the space moves seamlessly from the front parlor into the formal dining room/gallery and then to the cozy library/sitting area, which opens to a spacious outdoor terrace that overlooks the charming garden below. A separate dining area boasts an original 1800s floor-to-ceiling fireplace.
The master suite takes up the entire second floor and has high ceilings, three large front-facing windows, a fireplace, and two walk-in closets. It also boasts two full bathrooms, one of which has a Waterworks floating tub and custom steam shower. An adjoining sitting room comes complete with a second fireplace and can also be used as a home office.
On the third floor are two additional bedrooms, a bathroom, and a kitchenette. The front bedroom has an artistic loft feel, while the rear bedroom has two custom-designed casement doors that lead to a private terrace. The crowning jewel of the home is the penthouse addition media floor, which has two walls of windows and leads to a private roof deck.
In the summer of 2013, Candida Smith bought a $6.4 million unit at 77 8th Avenue, so perhaps that’s why she decided to leave behind her gorgeous townhouse.
