Free walking tour of the Flatiron District explores the neighborhood’s presidential history

To celebrate Presidents Day weekend, the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership is hosting a free special walking tour that explores the connection between U.S. presidents and the rich history of the Flatiron District. On February 20 at 11 a.m., tour guide Mike Kaback will embark on a 90-minute tour with guests, pointing out landmarks and providing context on how former presidents like Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant are tied to the historic area.
Beginning on 23rd Street at the tip of the Flatiron Building, seasoned tour guide Kaback will guide participants through the district, pointing out famous landmarks that played an important role in the city and nation’s political history.
For example, guests will observe the Worth Monument, an iconic obelisk on Fifth Avenue and Broadway that served as the presidential front row seat during parades and celebrations. Other destinations on the tour include the New York Life Insurance Building, MetLife Clock Tower, and Appellate Courthouse.
Participants will also learn about landmarks that once stood in the district, including the old Fifth Avenue Hotel, The Hoffman House, and Stanford White’s Madison Square Garden. Presidents regularly met at many of these historic landmarks for dinner parties and political gatherings.
