Yes, this Southampton Village home is palatial, but “castle” is not being used here as just an adjective; the historic home is actually titled “the Castle.” And it’s a fair moniker, as the red-brick residence is covered in romantic ivy, features a dreamy turret and sits on 43 acres. Famed Manhattan interior designer William Sofield of Studio Sofield purchased the estate in 1999 for $830,000 and spent over a decade restoring its original Arts and Crafts style. He has now listed the house, which was built in 1911 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, for $4.3 million.
Obviously the Castle is jaw-dropping from the front, but the backyard doesn’t disappoint either. An octagonal heated gunite pool mirrors the shape of the whimsical gazebo. Inside the cabana, a whitewashed wooden roof with hanging lanterns creates the feeling of an island escape. The geometric window cutouts really steal the show, though.
Inside the main house are three bedrooms, two fireplaces and impeccable hardwood floors. Sofield has outfitted the home with plenty of wood furnishings, and he’s accented the many pointed arch openings, intricate moldings and window lintels, and Gothic-inspired window frames.
The master bedroom is located inside the turret and includes a beautiful free-standing soaking tub, as well as a vanity nook complete with a sink. The space also boasts charming brick floors, massive arched windows and beamed ceilings.
