Futuristic-looking Pink Amoeba by THEVERYMANY Wants You to Explore Its Insides
The latest art installation at the Storefront for Art and Architecture is much more than a futuristic-looking pink amoeba. Oslo-based artist Jana Winderen and Architect Marc Fornes of THEVERYMANY have created this interactive piece, entitled Situation NY, as a way to invite visitors to question the properties of matter and the built environment surrounding us. A vibrating sound piece, it also uses light and form to heighten the experience.
According to the exhibition site, “Conceived as a sound object that absorbs and contrasts the site specificity of the Storefront Gallery with abstract, spatial, formal and acoustic variations and compositions, Situation NY raises questions about context, sensorial readings, estrangement and the uncanny tangentially resonating with contemporary debates around the ontology of objects.”
Situation NY was fabricated by BENGAL.FIERRO and is made of a complex web of parametrically generated shapes, coated in bright pink powder, that stretch from the floor to ceiling. Visitors walk and crawl through the intricate structure, which is made up of over 2,000 unique parts. The abstract shapes punched out of the skin create a play between shadows and light.
Situation NY is on view through November 21 to mark the launch of the Worldwide Storefront. More information is available at the Storefront for Art and Architecture.
