Nir Meiri’s Seaweed Marine Lights Bring the Ocean Indoors
Tel Aviv-based Nir Meiri Design Studio has an unconventional approach to everyday objects. With a special love for raw, wild materials, this studio creates high quality handcrafted designs that are surprising yet minimal. The Marine Light is one of their latest creations—a design that uses seaweed for a lampshade that gives off an emerald gleam.
Clean lines and specially selected materials characterize Nir Meiri’s designs. The studio’s Marine Lights feature a translucent green lampshade made from a luscious bunch of seaweed. The form is constructed by draping fresh algae over a thin metal structure, that once dry, shrinks to form the shade.
Once the algae are in place, Nir Meiri applies a coat of preservative to keep the seaweed from rotting or flaking off. And to highlight the marine plant, the lamp uses a light source set in the core of its cylindrical base. The resulting design is an extraordinary table lamp that also brings a bit of the ocean into one’s living spaces, sans sea shells.
