Soar into spring with free kite flying and live music at Brooklyn Bridge Park

Celebrate the start of spring beneath hundreds of vibrant kites in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy is hosting its annual Sound & Color! Spring Festival on May 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., a free family-friendly event that celebrates the beginning of the season with kite flying, live music, food vendors, activities for kids, and more. Guests can craft their own kites in a workshop and send them off into the sky with help from expert flying instructors. The festival remains the only day of the year when kite flying is allowed at Pier 5.
The festival brings science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) together while tying in the Caribbean’s rich history of kite-flying and outdoor activities into one free, all-day extravaganza.
The Conservancy is encouraging families to celebrate their own kite-flying traditions as well as their heritage by bringing their own kites. There will also be kites for sale, and those interested in making their own can attend a workshop and craft one in the Caribbean tradition.
Building upon the success of last year’s event, 2024’s Spring Festival includes an expanded musical lineup. The Eruption Steel Orchestra will captivate audiences with a performance of their steel-pan drum line. Additionally, trumpeter, conductor, composer, and arranger Igmar Thomas will perform at different locations in the park throughout the day.
The Spring Festival serves as the kick-off for the park’s spring event season. Last year, more than 5,000 attended. The event is free to attend and no advanced registration is required.
