We’ve all envied those charming celebrity carriage houses in the Village–like Taylor Swift’s Cornelia Street home–but we also know they cost millions to own. Built in 1892, this quaint brick building at 249 1/2 East 13th Street was once the studio of sculptors Karl Bitter and Giuseppe Moretti (Bitter created the East Doors for the Trinity Church and medallions on the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Moretti, the “Vulcan,” the world’s largest cast iron statue), and is often referred to as an important part of neighborhood history. You can now rent the entire home for $8,000 per month.
The building’s current owners live in the townhouse next door; they’ve seen the neighborhood transformed over the decades. As part of the changing East Village tableau, the one-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bath property itself has been transformed in a year-long renovation.
This unique rental opportunity takes the form of a two-story home. Modern conveniences like a washer/dryer and Mitsubishi split-system A/C add comfort to the historic surroundings. New hardwood floors and plenty of storage can be found throughout. On the ground level, you’ll find a large bedroom with plenty of closet space and a full bath.
On the upper floor, high ceilings, exposed brick, and 1890s stained-glass-and-steel factory windows evoke the building’s days as a light-filled sculptors’ studio. In addition to a half-bath, this floor offers a custom-designed kitchen with waterfall quartz countertops, custom cabinetry, a dishwasher, an induction range, and a French-door refrigerator.
Unlike many carriage houses in the neighborhood, the quirky building was actually constructed as a sculptor’s studio, with Moretti listed as its original owner, as Andrew Berman of Village Preservation previously described.
A plaque on the building’s facade reminds passersby and visitors that this eye-catching property is part of the neighborhood’s rich and diverse history.
