A new food and drink vendor is opening on the terrace of Prospect Park’s iconic Boathouse. The Prospect Park Alliance on Wednesday announced the opening of Purslane Cafe, which will offer healthy and sustainably sourced food and coffee, as well as cocktails, wine, and beer on select evenings. Starting July 4, the cafe will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Beaux Arts building was built in 1905 and is one of the city’s first to be landmarked. Surrounded by tranquil nature, the Boathouse sits on the Lullwater of Prospect Park Lake and currently is a scenic spot for weddings and other events.
“The Prospect Park Boathouse is one of the park’s most beloved and scenic destinations and a historic landmark. The Alliance is dedicated to providing more food options in the park for the community, and Purslane Cafe will offer delicious, consciously sourced food and drinks for all to enjoy,” Morgan Monaco, president of the Prospect Park Alliance, said.
At the new Pursale Cafe, menu items include drinks like coffee, tea, lemonade, and soda, baked goods like scones and croissants, and various sandwiches, including fig and prosciutto and jerk chicken. Prices range from $3 to $12.
Additionally, the cafe will host live music and pop-up events to bring energy to the Boathouse terrace.
Operated by the New York-based sustainable hospitality group, the Oberon Group, Purslane Cafe serves as a physical storefront for Purslane, the state’s first zero-waste, carbon-neutral catering company. The group hosts events at the Boathouse and Prospect Park’s Picnic House, using only sustainable, recyclable, and compostable products.
“Brooklyn is The Oberon Group’s backyard and home to the majority of our restaurants, so we’re excited to be able to partner with Prospect Park Alliance and bring this new offering to such a historic part of the park,” Henry Moynahan Rich, managing partner of the Oberon Group, said.
“We’re thrilled to have this personal touch point between park visitors and Purslane, allowing people to interact with and learn about our mission to create a more sustainable food system.”
Purslane Cafe joins other food and drink concessions in Prospect Park, including Winner, which opened at the Picnic House in 2022, Bluestone Cafe at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside, and King David Tacos at Grand Army Plaza. Plus, Smorgasburg runs on Sundays in the park during the warmer months.
