Attention New Yorkers: Barneys New York is returning to Soho, but only for a limited time. The beloved luxury retailer will host a five-week-long pop-up at 14 Prince Street from September 5 through October 11, to coincide with New York Fashion Week. Managed by beauty brand Hourglass Cosmetics, the 1,500-square-foot pop-up will feature a selection of both established and up-and-coming brands, including Marc Jacobs, Thom Browne, Christopher John Rogers, and Khaite, and newcomers Reome, Perfumehead, and AKT, according to Retail TouchPoints.
The inspiration for the pop-up came as Hourglass thought of ways to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The beauty brand debuted on the floor of Barneys 20 years ago, and to honor the legacy of the once-prosperous department store, the brand decided to celebrate with a temporary Barneys store.
Carisa Janes, founder and president of Hourglass, reached out to former Barneys New York creative director Simon Doonan and ex-senior vice president and fashion director Julie Gilhart, both of whom expressed interest in the concept, as long as the pop-up would feature both emerging and established brands.
“Barneys was an exciting place where a new brand could get its start. I’m grateful to Hourglass for remembering how they began at Barneys 20 years ago, and now celebrating the many different types of energic talent found in the fabric of New York City,” Gilhart told Vogue.
The pop-up will feature a beauty bar offering limited-edition Barneys x Hourglass cosmetic palettes. Hourglass is partnering with the Council of Fashion Designers of America to donate to the non-profit association’s scholarship fund that supports emerging talents.
“As Hourglass celebrates 20 incredible years of innovation, we’re honoring the iconic place where we got our start—Barneys New York—by paying it forward for the next generation of creative talent,” Hourglass posted on LinkedIn.
“The unique collaboration includes an extraordinary Hourglass & Barneys pop-up experience, featuring an exciting curation of fashion and beauty brands, limited-edition products, exclusive merchandise, guest appearances, cultural events, and more.”
In February 2020, Barneys announced it would close all of its stores, following filing for bankruptcy in 2019 due to a major rent hike at its Madison Avenue location to $30 million, according to the New York Post.
This isn’t the first time Barneys has opened as a temporary pop-up location. After its flagship Madison Avenue store was sold in November 2019 for $270 million to Authentic Brands Group (ABG) and B. Riley Financial Inc, the brand stayed at the location as a pop-up for a year.

Why did it ever close? Would artophiles tolerate closure of the Guggenheim or MOMA?
