Not far from the Clinton Hill apartment where he grew up, the former Fort Greene home of the late rapper Notorious B.I.G. and his wife Faith Evens has hit the market for $1.7 million, as the NY Post reported. The two-bedroom duplex is located in a former stable building at 159 Carlton Avenue and is today owned by a well-known costume designer who infused the apartment with a gorgeous mix of historic architecture, art, and stylish upgrades. According to the Post, Biggie Smalls released his famous album “Ready to Die” while living here in 1994.
The building is also known as the Feuchtwanger Stable, which was built in 1888 in the Romanesque Revival style. Though its facade is heavy and rusticated, these interiors feel light and airy thanks to 12-foot ceilings, a large arched window, and whitewashed exposed brick walls timber ceilings. As the Post pointed out, the super stylish decor is thanks to current owner Caroline Duncan, “a notable costume designer who has worked on award-winning series including ‘The Affair’ and ‘When They See Us.'” She bought the 1,700-square-foot apartment in 2011 for just $749,000 (meaning she’s looking at a nearly $1 million profit).
The kitchen has been totally modernized, with a Bosch five-burner stovetop, deep double sink, Glassos and Carrera countertops, and two stainless steel ovens.
Off the kitchen, behind an oversized antique barn door, is the first bedroom that has been set up as a library, with custom-milled cabinetry and a built-in Murphy bed. Connected is a renovated full bathroom, large walk-in closet, and overhead storage.
On the lower level, the main bedroom faces the street. It’s adjacent to a small home office and a custom-designed dressing room.
The bathroom on this floor is truly one-of-a-kind, featuring exposed wooden beams and columns with custom built-in shelving to match. It has an oversized walk-in shower and a freestanding soaking tub. There’s also a large laundry room with a sink on this floor.
Christopher Wallace, who went on to become known as Notorious B.I.G., grew up not far from here at 226 St. James Place in Clinton Hill. That one-bedroom apartment was last on the market as a $4,000/month rental. In 2019, the block where he grew up was renamed “Christopher ‘Notorious B.I.G.’ Wallace Way.”
In 1994, he bought the apartment at 159 Carlton Avenue and lived there with his wife, Faith Evans, and her daughter, Chyna Tahjere Griffin, according to the Post. In more recent years, the building was home to “True Blood” actor Denis O’Hare. After 20 years, he sold his duplex for $1.7 million in 2017.
