Revolutionary War-era house in Sag Harbor with a modern update and pool house asks $11.5M

According to the National Register of Historic Places, this Hamptons home was built by Lieutenant Colonel John Hulbert between 1780 and 1790. Hulbert was a general in the Revolutionary War, where he oversaw 3,000 soldiers in charge of protecting the East End from British Invasion. Located in Sag Harbor Village, the home has gotten some modern updates over the years, all of which have received approval from the local boards and are sensitive to the history of the house. With 5,000 square feet, six bedrooms, a 40-foot pool and hot tub, and a guest/pool house, the “Captain’s House” is asking $11,500,000.

A very interesting historic facet of the home is the flag pole on the sprawling front lawn. According to Sotheby’s International Realty, the flag Hulbert and his men carried pre-dated the one Betsy Ross designed in 1777, so it’s thought this flag is older. There’s a plaque in front of the flag explaining the home’s history.

After entering via the wrap-around covered porch, the living spaces are all open and airy. Beamed ceilings are a nod to the home’s past, while the double rows of windows and floor-to-ceiling wall of glass create a contemporary feel.

Also on the first floor of the house are a formal living room, den, laundry room, and bedroom suite. The primary bedroom suite and another bedroom suite are on the second floor, and on the third floor are two more bedrooms and another full bathroom.

In the backyard, there’s a patio directly off the dining room. There’s also a 40-foot gunite pool and hot tub, large bluestone patio, outdoor fireplace, outdoor shower, and giant Japanese maples.

The pool house has a bedroom with a king-size bed, additional kitchen to serve the pool area, full bath and steam shower, and a living space with 14-foot ceilings.

As it’s located on Main Street, the home is just a short walk to all of Sag Harbor’s restaurants and shops. As the listing states, “this Captain’s House has arrived and become one of the premier properties in all of Sag Harbor Village.”
