Once occupied by JFK and British royalty, the Plaza’s famous Astor Suite is back for $20M

Considered “one of the most well-known homes in America and the finest in the world-renowned Plaza,” the fabled Astor Suite has come on the market for $19,950,000. The four-bedroom corner suite faces both Central Park and Fifth Avenue and was previously occupied by John Jacob Astor, John F. Kennedy, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. In fact, the interior architects at S.R. Gambrel Inc. brought in master artisans that rebuilt Windsor Castle in England to help transform the space. From hand-drawn plaster to rich English oak paneling to hand-hammered leather walls from France, this home is certainly fit for royalty.
The home is 4,299 square feet with a convenient L-shaped layout and has four bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms. As the listing tells us, “Residence 508 is available for sale next door and can be used as a suite for guests or staff.”
It’s currently owned by Esprit founder and former CEO Jürgen Friedrich, who bought the apartment in 2007 for $25.5 million. After undergoing the current renovation, he first put it back on the market the following year for $55 million, and it’s been on and off the market since.
The formal dining room sits behind the corner, curving window, where there’s a built-in banquette and gorgeous plasterwork on the ceilings.
Off one side of the dining room is the Central Park-facing living room.
A double-sided fireplace separates the living room from the library, which can technically be the fifth bedroom. Beautiful wood built-ins and coffered ceilings make this space feel extra cozy.
The kitchen is back off the other side of the dining room and has another built-in banquette.
The two secondary bedroom suites both have en-suite bathrooms and ample closet space (one has a walk-in closet).
The primary bedroom suite has two separate pairs of en-suite bathrooms and walk-in closets/dressing rooms. There’s also a small office nook and a fireplace.
Residents of the Plaza enjoy hotel-style services and amenities, including concierge and butler service, 24-hour in-room dining, twice-daily housekeeping, and access to all the landmarked building offers like The Palm Court, Plaza Food Hall, Champagne Bar, Rose Club, Warren-Tricomi Salon, Grand Ballroom, Terrace Room, and luxury retail shops. Plus, Fifth Avenue and Central Park are right outside your door.
