Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker has purchased a duplex apartment on the Upper East Side for $1.595 million, according to city property records. Located at 42 East 73rd Street, the three-bed, three-bath home boasts a Greek-inspired garden, with stately columns, a brick patio, and mature plantings. Whitaker, who is also a Sustainable Development Goals Advocate for the United Nations, snagged the property for about 8 percent less than the last listed asking price of $1.74 million. It was first listed last October for $1.895 million.
Located between Madison and Park Avenues and just a block from Central Park, the duplex could serve as the perfect pied-à-terre, according to the listing. On the upper level, an entrance foyer leads to a large living-dining area with charming pre-war features like crown molding, hardwood floors, and a gas fireplace.
On this level, there’s also a small but capable kitchen with high-end appliances, two bedrooms, two newly renovated ensuite baths, and lots of closet space. The rear bedroom and the living area have access to the garden via glass doors.
The lower level could serve as a third bedroom, an office, or a home gym. On this floor, there’s a full bath, four closets, and a patio, which you can see from the garden above through a unique cut-out. A large storage area was included in the sale.
The well-maintained Upper East Side co-op was built in 1920 and contains eight units, with only two per floor for maximum privacy. According to CityRealty, two other units are currently for sale at the building, a one-bedroom on the fourth floor asking $775,000 and another one-bedroom on the third floor asking $700,000.
