How’s that for bragging rights? This incredible townhouse at 530 East 87th Street in Yorkville was built in the 1870s by the Astor family, and it later was owned by one of Theodore Roosevelt’s granddaughters. In more recent years, it underwent a designer renovation (it was even featured in Architectural Digest) that includes four wood-burning fireplaces with original mantles, lacquered walls, and a whimsical garden with climbing vines and lanterns.
Enter the home on the garden level, where a small foyer opens to a home office nook through pocket doors. There’s also a walk-in closet and powder room. From there is the eat-in kitchen, which features Italian Calacatta Gold marble countertops, custom cabinetry, a large center island that seats four, and top-of-the-line appliances including a Subzero refrigerator and two freezer drawers, two additional Subzero refrigerator drawers, a Miele dishwasher, a five-burner induction cooktop with a vented hood, a Wolf oven, microwave, warming drawer, and an oversized farm sink.
Behind the kitchen is the spacious dining room. There’s the first wood-burning fireplace, along with custom built-ins and a bar area with a wine refrigerator.
Through large French doors off the dining room is the enchanted garden. The trelliswork provides the perfect backdrop for the climbing ivy and lanterns.
Upstairs on the parlor floor, 11-foot ceilings set the stage for the gorgeous designer renovation. The grand living room and the elegant library are separated by oversized French doors. Both rooms feature fireplaces and lacquered walls; the library also boasts floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
The third floor is entirely devoted to the master suite. The bedroom has the fourth fireplace and three huge windows overlooking the street. In between is the master bath, clad in Italian Calacatta Gold marble and complete with a soaking tub, large walk-in shower, two sinks, and a separate water closet. In the rear, a dressing room has six closets, two of which are walk-ins, along with a sliding ladder to reach the upper cabinets and a large center island with even more storage.
Two additional bedrooms are on the fourth floor, both of which have en-suite bathrooms with a skylight and large closets. Also on this floor is a laundry room with two sets of washer/dryers, a sink, and a walk-in linen closet. An additional skylight in the hall brings light all the way throughout the home.
The limestone home is just half a block from Carl Schurz Park in a peaceful section of Yorkville.
