This magical enclave looks more like an English village than a part of Queens, but, in fact, Forest Hills Gardens was built in the early 20th century to resemble England’s garden cities. The private community consists of more than 800 free-standing and attached houses, of which one of the latter has just hit the market for $2,485,000. The six-bedroom house at 34 Greenway Terrace has the neighborhood’s signature Tudor style, as well as a front patio, rear private parking spot, finished basement, and plenty of preserved details.

Enter into a foyer, which then leads into the living room. Through there, is the dining room and the adjacent eat-in kitchen. Throughout are classic moldings, fireplace mantels, walnut floors, and large windows.

The galley kitchen has granite counters, lovely open shelving, and room for a small dining table. Off the kitchen are stairs to the rear yard.

There are two large bedrooms with a pass-through on the second floor, as well as another small bedroom and a full bathroom. The third floor has a similar layout.

The finished basement includes four separate rooms for storage, a laundry room, and a small full bathroom.

The 140-acre Forest Hills Gardens was designed by architect and urban planner Grosvenor Atterbury and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. (the son and partner of Frederick Law Olmsted of Central Park and Prospect Park fame). As 6sqft once explained, their vision was to model English garden cities’ ideals of “shared green space with urban convenience for the working classes.” The reason the community has remained so idyllic over the past 100+ years is a covenant that was put in place early on that limits industry and prevents exterior alterations without approval, which new owners today must still sign. This all overseen by the Forest Hills Gardens Corporation.

Though Forest Hills Gardens seems removed from the city, it’s right near the E, F, and R trains, with express service getting you to Midtown in just 20 minutes. Another option is the Long Island Railroad that leaves from Station Square (pictured above) and arrives at Penn Station in 15 minutes. A three-minute walk will get you to the Square, as well as to the West Side Tennis Club and all the shops and restaurants along Austin Street.
