Rupert Murdoch buys $30M Central Park South co-op

Media giant Rupert Murdoch is in contract to purchase a full-floor co-op on Billionaires’ Row. As first reported by the Wall Street Journal, the News Corp founder bought a 6,500-square-foot apartment on the 27th floor of the Hampshire House that was last listed for $30,000,000; the final sales price has not been made public. The seven-bedroom, five-bathroom residence was the longtime home of late hedge-fund magnate Julian H. Robertson Jr. and famed philanthropist Alice Tully.
The sprawling unit boasts a 38-foot-long living room with three towering arched doorways that lead to an outdoor terrace with breathtaking views overlooking Central Park. Entry to the apartment is through a grand gallery with its own view of the park, connecting the living room and formal dining room.
Located adjacent to the living room are the apartment’s primary bedroom and sitting area, a space originally designed to be a home library. The suite has three oversized windows and a fireplace, a large dressing room, an en-suite bathroom with a separate shower, and a soaking tub. The primary bedroom has direct access to one of the unit’s secondary bedrooms, which is currently being used as a home gym.
The kitchen has been recently restored and features state-of-the-art stainless steel hardware and appliances, including a stove with double ovens, two refrigerators, two dishwashers, an ice maker, two wine coolers, large storage spaces, a separate laundry room, and a butler’s pantry.
A paneled media room can be accessed through a set of pocket doors, leading into the bookshelf-lined room that has space for a banquet, big breakfast, or casual dinner table. The apartment’s layout can be configured to include as many as seven bedrooms, according to the listing.
The property was listed by Joanne Douglas of Douglas Elliman. Deborah Grubman of The Corcoran Group represented Murdoch in the deal.
Tully, best known for her contributions to the city’s musical institutions, started to gradually expand the unit in 1959 until she owned the entire floor, according to the Wall Street Journal. Robertson purchased the apartment roughly 30 years ago.
Last March, Murdoch listed two of his homes in the residential tower One Madison for $62 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. He purchased the two condos for roughly $57.9 million in 2014.
Located at 150 Central Park South, Hampshire House is a 37-story co-op completed in 1940. The building is often noted for its steeply-pitched copper roof with two tall chimneys.
