This $4M upstate Zen retreat is on a private island in the Hudson River
Located in the sleepy hamlet of New Hamburg in Dutchess County, separated from the banks of the Hudson River by a mere footbridge, this unique property asking $3.995 million is called Rabbit Island. And if you’re into privacy and water views with an easy commute to anywhere, you’ll want to hop on it. This pretty package includes a 4,427-square-foot house surrounded by decks and tranquil gardens, and it’s a four-minute walk from the New Hamburg train station.
This mini island paradise is landscaped with natural rock gardens, tall trees, specimen plants, and a rich carpet of moss, ferns, and hostas.
You get river views from every room, of course, with the surrounding greenery swaying in the gentle island breeze. Inside, a big great room is anchored by a stone fireplace; a cozy library has another stone fireplace.
There’s a sitting room with a private guest suite, clad in glass for panoramic viewing. Throughout the home are custom-designed details that make each room unique, like a vaulted ceiling with exposed beams.
The round kitchen gets light from above. In the center, an island holds the range and hood. The kitchen opens onto a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen in an open-air dining gazebo.
The home’s best surprise might be a three-story observation tower for contemplating a sweeping vista down the Hudson.
The master suite offers a “spa-quality” bath. There’s also a guest suite with a private entrance that includes a fireplace and walls of tall windows.
The home is surrounded by porches and decks with benches, perfect for entertaining or just enjoying the view. Also on-island is a boathouse; the listing mentions a four-car garage, but we’re not sure where that would be located–though on the “mainland” near the footbridge would make sense. Rabbit Island is just a 90-minute hop to Grand Central Station.
