Construction progresses on $10M retail project with a roof terrace at 70 West 93rd Street

It’s been in the works since 2015, but the 15,000-square-foot glass-enclosed retail addition fronting the apartment tower at 70 West 93rd Street is quickly coming together, I Love the Upper West Side neighborhood blog reports. The new retail addition, designed by Beyer Blinder Belle, is replacing the outdoor plaza that surrounded the rental building.
The full block retail space at 93rd and Columbus Avenue is described by the architects as “A reimagined street-level for a 1970’s residential tower” that includes “contemporary retail storefronts and creates a vibrant mixed-use environment, along with updated amenities, entrance lobby, and outdoor landscaped roof terrace.”
The roof terrace, which could be accessed by residents and the public, is intended to make up for the loss of the outdoor plaza currently occupying the space. The developer, Stellar Management, also manages the 30-story apartment tower. The company said when proposing the addition in 2015 that new retail tenants would not be big-box stores; there’s no word so far on who the tenants might be. The $10 million development spans 15,000 total square feet and include a new children’s playground and other amenities.
