The brick Georgian townhouse in Sutton Place designed for Anne Vanderbilt, the wife of railroad heir William Vanderbilt, has hit the market for $21 million. Located at 1 Sutton Place, the 15-room home sits on the northeast corner of 57th Street, punctuated by a bright blue front door. Vanderbilt, along with a group of wealthy buyers, is credited with turning the remote, riverside Manhattan neighborhood into one of the city’s most influential areas.
Other notable owners of the property include Charles Merrill, co-founder of Merrill Lynch, and Richard Jenrette, a co-founder of a Wall Street securities firm, according to the Wall Street Journal. The newspaper reports the current seller is the estate of Drue Heinz, who was married to Jack Heinz II of the Heinz company. Heinz, who passed away in April, bought the home in the 1970s.
The 7,000-square-foot townhouse features an entry foyer with a stunning staircase. The circular staircase brings visitors to a 32-foot-long drawing room. With oversized windows, the room overlooks the garden below.
Through this hall, there is a 21-foot dining room with French doors that lead onto a landscaped terrace. While the interiors need some updating, there is no shortage of space to work with. The home measures 20 feet wide and 70 feet long.
The third floor contains the master bedroom, which boasts water and garden views. Next door, the marble master bath with custom closets has a dressing area, two sinks, a soaking tub and a separate stall shower.
