In Williamsburg, an 1800s brick townhouse built for dockworkers asks $2M
This Williamsburg property comes from a row of townhomes along North 9th Street originally built in the 1870s for dockworkers. Those days are long gone, and the three-bedroom home is now asking $1.995 million. The interior, admittedly, isn’t stunning–as the listing says, you’ll need to “bring your architect and/or designer to realize this property’s full potential.” But the house does come with a prime ‘burg location, air rights to build an addition, and a wonderfully deep, lush backyard garden.
The two-story brick townhouse might be modest but it’s also an example of beautiful historic architecture in a neighborhood better known for former warehouse buildings. According to the listing, the total buildable square footage is over 3,300, meaning there’s plenty of air rights for a sizable addition. (Sadly, the home isn’t landmarked, which means it could also be demolished.) Many of the houses on the block have undergone expansions and renovations.
Inside, any historic features reminiscent of this home as a dock worker’s haven are gone.
The living room and laundry are located on the lower level, with an eat-in kitchen and bedroom on the first floor.
Two more bedrooms are located on the second floor. The master has two windows looking out to the home’s back garden.
The townhouse may be on the smaller side, but the garden is surprisingly deep. It’s filled with gorgeous flowers, trees, and greenery of all sorts, topped off with peaceful places to sit and relax. Such a peaceful spot is a godsend considering this home’s location in the heart of bustling Williamsburg, two blocks in one direction to the main drag of Bedford Avenue and two blocks in the other to the waterfront and East River State Park.
