eBay exec’s madly mod and colorful Chelsea pad asks $2.2M

eBay executive and Fab.com shopping site founder Bradford Shellhammer raced back from a vacation weekend to tour the Chelsea home he’s now selling for $2.2 million. He’s looking for more space that’s “more about texture than color,” the New York Post reports. In the years he’s been a resident at 575 Sixth Avenue, Shellhammer has transformed the Chelsea loft into a Memphis-style-meets-mid-century-modern masterpiece in sherbet hues, complete with art by Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. Refinery29 once called the home “The Most Colorful Apartment We’ve EVER seen.”

Shellhammer bought the Chelsea co-op loft in 2012 for $1.69 million with his then-boyfriend, investment banker Georgi Balinov (they’re now married) from his favorite author, Michael Cunningham (“The Hours”), who accepted his bid though others were higher. The two are now friends.

In addition to the home’s impressive interiors there are skyline views from the top-floor loft through 12 oversized soundproofed windows. In the living/dining area, an open layout  is sun-filled and has plenty of the the industrial-chic elements that make lofts so iconic such as deep-stain hardwood floors and architectural metalwork. A reflective graphite accent wall adds a designer’s touch, and creature comforts like multiple double-height closets, central AC and an A/V system (including a hidden retractable TV) reduce stress for a busy New Yorker.

The master bedroom and bath both feature offer Empire State Building views. in the bath you’ll find heated polished concrete floors.

The 16-unit cooperative building rocks a terrazzo-trimmed elevator lobby and offers an expansive roof deck.

Says Shellhamer of his need for more space, “I have about 400 pairs of shoes, and need somewhere to store them.” He’ll be giving up a short hop to work at eBay HQ, also in Chelsea, if he moves to Soho, Tribeca or Nomad, neighborhoods he’s eyeing as possibilities. “I grew up romanticizing New York City and its open loft spaces in the 1980s. That’s what I want — something I’ll be comfortable in when I’m 50.”
