Jimmy Choo co-founder Tamara Mellon finally sells UES penthouse at a $14M discount
Editor’s note: Original reports listed George Condo as the buyer of the Carhart Mansion’s penthouse, belonging to Tamara Mellon, but he actually bought a different unit in the building from Merrill Lynch’s Do Woo Kim.
You’ll be hard pressed to find a pair of discounted Jimmy Choos, but the iconic shoe brand’s co-founder Tamara Mellon didn’t fare as well when it came to her Upper East Side penthouse, which sits atop the historic Carhart Mansion at 3 East 95th Street. Mellon bought the Carnegie Hill apartment from Seagram heir Charles Bronfman Jr. and first listed it for sale in 2014 for $34 million. After several price chops and an attempt as a $85,000/month rental, it’s finally found a buyer reports LL NYC. Contemporary artist George Condo paid $19.8 million for the condo (no pun intended), much less than the most recent ask of $25 million.
Architect Horace Trumbauer designed the Carhart Mansion in 1913 in the Louis XVI Parisian style; it’s today considered one of the best examples of 18th-century French Classicism in New York. In 2005, it was converted to four huge, modern condos (get a look at another one of the palatial pads here).
This duplex penthouse boasts 10 rooms spread over 7,140 square feet, as well as 5,390 square feet of outdoor space. There’s 12-foot ceilings, herringbone oak floors, direct elevator access, and a center hall entry gallery.
Both the dining and living rooms have wood-burning fireplaces. The sunken 23′ x 41′ living room also has an enclosed solarium, access to the south-facing terrace with its limestone columns.
The open kitchen is exceptionally modern, with a stone center island, custom white lacquer cabinets, high-end appliances, three skylights, and an adjacent staff suite and bathroom.
On the opposite side of the gallery are three bedrooms.
The dramatic master suite boasts three sets of recessed arched windows, a modern white fireplace, that massive custom closet, and a luxurious mirrored bathroom with a double vanity, claw-foot tub, and Italian mosaic tile flooring.
A staircase with a carved oak banister leads to the upper level, where you’ll find a 30′ x 23′ library/media room with yet another wood-burning fireplace, in addition to a wall of custom built-in bookshelves and floor-to-ceiling doors that open to another wrap-around terrace, this one with a built-in television and bar and views of Central Park. Also upstairs are an office, kitchenette, and powder room.
Mellon found her next home back in October, dropping $18.4 million on an equally impressive condo at the Greenwich Lane. As for new owner George Condo, he’ll have plenty of room to display his artwork, which is featured in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Whitney, and the Met.
