Meet Marie, a laid-back bookworm searching for a roommate for her Cobble Hill two-bedroom. Marie, a Florida native, moved to the neighborhood just over four years ago after a spending several years in Chicago and more than a year living out of a backpack in Central America. Up until a week ago, she shared her Brooklyn apartment with a friend who has since flown the coop to teach in Paris. This has left Marie with an extra bedroom, and for anyone looking for new digs, a great opportunity to live in one of the city’s best neighborhoods.
What’s she looking for in a roommate? “I’m very much quiet and relaxed, needing to come down after a fast-paced, non-stop workday at the office,” she says about herself. “I come home change out the heels, grab a glass of wine, forage for something to eat, and zone out with some Netflix, reading, or whatever creative project I’m currently working on. I’m looking for the same chilled, low-key personality, where home is more a sanctuary than the Playboy mansion.”
The apartment is a comfortable 1,100 square feet, and the bedroom (seen at the end of the post) is a sizable 12 x 15 feet with two large windows and lots of storage. This apartment is newly renovated with updated appliances and flooring. It also boasts a prime location between Smith Street and Boerum Place, close to tons of restaurants and bars (Bar Tabac, Clover Club), great mom-and-pop shops (Fish Tales, Shelsky’s, One Girl Cookie), as well as more mainstream standbys like Trader Joe’s and Starbucks. For the fitness conscious, there is a Bar Method across the street from the apartment building, a YMCA a couple of blocks away on Atlantic Avenue, and a New York Sports Club just down the street.

What do you do for a living?
Marie: I’m a Residential Manager and Special Events Planner at NYU. I love that event planning includes a creative aspect and a logistical aspect and the work always leads to a beautiful finished product. Essentially every event is a celebration, and everyone leaves happy! That’s very fulfilling.
What do you do in your spare time?
Marie: I’m really into photography, Krav Maga at Krav Maga Academy, running a Meetup group called Rooftop Confidential which has been a lot of fun, and of course trying to write the next great American novel…I think I’ve taken every class at Gotham Writers Workshop. I’m actually thinking of hiring someone to stand over my shoulders with a gun so I get it done—it’d be cheaper and probably much more effective.
What are some of your favorite things about the neighborhood?
Marie: Like all great New York neighborhoods Cobble Hill has everything within a five block radius of me—Trader Joe’s, YMCA, movie theaters, restaurants (I can’t be out of delivery distance from Sottocasa Pizzeria) and bars galore (no better cocktails than Clover Club). There are some really great neighbors on my floor who look out for you—they accept your deliveries and can be trusted with your keys to let maintenance in when you can’t because you’re at work.
What kind of roommate are you looking for?
Marie: I’m looking for someone reliable and financially responsible, of course. But it’s the intangibles that really make or break the roommate relationship. So what meshes best with my personality type is someone this side of anal about cleanliness. The city is so dirty and grimy (think about what you bring into your home at the end of the day), which is why I am more of a neat and germ freak than I would be living somewhere else. Also, as a professional who works 9-10 hour days in a position that requires a lot of communication, at the end of the day I want to come home and relax. I’m happy to chat with my roommate for a bit but am also very much about respecting boundaries with needing space and privacy. I’m trustworthy, a person of good character, funny and love a good intellectual debate now and then, especially on science and technology given I work in this field.

Size: A sunny 12 x 15 feet with lots of storage (large closet with two big overhead alcove storage spaces). The apartment measures about 1,100 square feet overall.
Transportation: G and F train two blocks away and two stops from Manhattan. A, C, 2, 3, 4, and 5 trains within a 10-minute walk.
Other perks: Fire escape/landing outside your window, rooftop access, friendly neighbors, great location and superior convenience with every shop you can imagine just steps away. Short walk to the waterfront and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
