The full-floor Nomad home that once belonged to famed operatic soprano Hildegard Behrens hit the market this week. Taking up the entire 13th floor of 11 West 30th Street, the classic Manhattan loft boasts 11-foot ceilings, an open layout, and industrial charm. Behrens, who was a star Wagner singer at the Metropolitan Opera in the 1980s and 90s, bought the apartment in 1987 and lived there until 1999. It’s now available for $3,350,000.
According to a spokesperson for Compass, the brokerage with the listing, when Behrens lived at the building, the loft was designed like a subway station, with “graffiti art and concrete signs everywhere.” The current owner, visual artist Jo Shane, who bought the apartment in 2001, tapped Juergen Riehm of 1100 Architects to renovate the home, which retained that industrial vibe with concrete floors and minimalist fixtures.
Measuring roughly 3,000 square feet, the home has three bedrooms and two and a half baths. A key-locked elevator brings you into the apartment. Around 60 feet of western frontage and eight oversized windows illuminate the space with natural light.
The kitchen features a unique mix of milled oak shelving and poured concrete countertops. A huge pantry is accessible via sliding doors. A cozy corner den is nearby, which could also become a convenient home office or studio.
Situated in a private wing-like section of the home, the spacious primary suite boasts a private terrace, a walk-in closet, and an en-suite bath with double vanity.
On the other end of the home are two south-facing bedrooms and a media room, all of which are framed by a planting terrace, which can be converted into functional outdoor space, according to the listing. Another perk is a full laundry room.
Located just off 5th Avenue, 11 West 30th Street was built in 1927 and contains just 17 apartments. Amenities include a full-time super and a shared roof deck.
