A fashion designer’s cozy converted 1920s barn in upstate NY asks $2.9M

A converted barn in upstate New York owned by a notable fashion designer is now on the market. Keren Craig, the co-founder of the high-end clothing brand Marchesa, has owned the property for 14 years, during which she renovated, expanded, and transformed the 100-year-old barn into a well-designed escape from city life. Located about two hours north of Manhattan in the laid-back hamlet of Accord, the home, asking $2,875,000, sits on over six acres of scenic forest.
Craig had been visiting the country town for years before deciding to buy a home there, she told Domino in a 2019 story featuring the home.
“I remember turning into the drive, and my husband and I looking at each other like: ‘Oh, God, this is going to be the one, isn’t it?’” Craig told the magazine. “Somehow we were going to make it happen because it was just so magical.”
No doubt the property’s historic magic has been preserved. Measuring over 4,600 square feet across 6.5 acres, the home has five bedrooms and three and a half baths. The steel staircase seen immediately upon entering was constructed to reach the second level, which has been turned into a large living space.
Off the main entry is the bright country kitchen, designed by Plain English, and a walk-in pantry.
Also in the front part of the home is a cozy sitting room and dining room, warmed by a wood-burning fireplace, hardwood flooring, and lots of natural light.
Featuring west-facing French doors, a sunny bonus room/ sitting room leads to the primary suite. Floor-to-ceiling windows line the hallway to the bedroom.
The primary suite takes up the newly constructed southern wing, boasting vaulted ceilings, a walk-in closet, and a glamorous full bath with dark green Zellige tile. Adding to the resort feel, there’s a private patio with a cold plunge just outside the bedroom.
The four nicely-sized guest rooms are in the back of the house, with one featuring a private patio and a bath with a soaking tub.
The second story, originally not properly insulated, was fully renovated to make it a liveable space. According to the listing, the “ceilings were vaulted to the roofline, high windows added and the entire space painted a tranquil white.” French doors were also added to one end of this loft-like level, from which picture-perfect views of the surrounding acreage are on display.
A convenient mud room features a built-in bench that wraps around the room and leads to the driveway and outdoor space.
Located within the Ulster County town of Rochester, Accord has attracted new residents from New York City who sought a quieter life upstate, which unsurprisingly increased during the pandemic. In addition to Craig, other high-profile residents in the area include actors Michelle Williams, Vera Farmiga, and Willem Dafoe, as the New York Times reported.
The home is just under 100 miles from Manhattan, roughly a two-hour drive. Nearest transit options include Amtrak in Rhinecliff or Metro-North in Poughkeepsie.
