Just 15 minutes from trendy Hudson, N.Y., and five minutes from the town of Catskill, this unusual Arts-and-Crafts-style property at 5280 Cauterskill Road has roots in modern architecture and international travel. Asking $1,975,000, this Catskills mountaintop aerie stands on a 32-acre lot, offering a main house, a separate guest house, a heated saltwater gunite pool, and acres of secluded rock paths and lush gardens. The home was built in 1920 for Alleyne Ireland, a British author known for his well-documented travel throughout Asia; his friendship with architect Frank Lloyd Wright inspired the design of this upstate estate.

As first reported by the New York Post, the home’s current owner, Lisa Muskat, is an award-winning film producer. The previous owner, NYC-based AD 100 designer Steven Shadely, discovered the home in ruins and proceeded to reconstruct it from the ground up, preserving its original stone walls and fireplaces. Shadely added unique details that reflected the home’s creative construction and history, including zinc roof tiles shipped from France.

The main house is anchored by a spacious living room with a wood-burning fireplace. The light-filled kitchen, featuring another large, modern fireplace, invites creativity and lively gatherings. Top-flight tools include a Wolf range, two ovens, an integrated refrigerator, and a dishwasher. A long dining table and two large window seats with western mountain views complete the living and entertaining space.

There are two bedrooms in the main house; the primary bedroom has a large and luxurious ensuite bath. On a hill above the main house, up a natural stone staircase and surrounded by elegantly landscaped grounds, a separate building offers a third bedroom and a full ensuite bath.

The lushly planted grounds feature 1930s-inspired gardens and a heated saltwater gunite pool. This verdant picture is framed by the surrounding mountain vistas.

Despite its lovely seclusion, the property–protected by a whole-house generator and water filtration system–is at the center of a booming upstate arts and cultural scene. New York City is just two hours away by car or train.
