Fōz Design transforms an old upstate farmhouse into a bright, rustic-modern retreat

Located upstate in historic Hyde Park, this 1830s farmhouse recently underwent a full gut renovation by New York architecture firm Fōz Design. The project, called Fallkill Farm, was executed in collaboration with custom-builder Wolcott Builders, a team effort resulting in what is now a light-infused, rustic, modern retreat that preserved as many of the home's historic elements as possible, while adding modern, purposeful elements to expose views of the 36-acre property, complete with three barns and a pond.

This beautiful home situated on the banks of the Hudson River in Saugerties, New York is a perfect example of how elegant rustic can be. The home comes from Fōz Design, a multi-disciplinary architecture and design studio in New York City, as a weekend family escape and a modern interpretation of the traditional woodsy cabin.

INTERVIEW: Fōz Design’s Fauzia Khanani, a Young Architect Goes Solo in NYC

Apart from Zaha Hadid, Jeanne Gang and Annabelle Selldorf, very few women in architecture manage to grab headlines like their male counterparts. But a relative newcomer named Fauzia Khanani is hoping to help change all of that. Fauzia started her practice, Fōz Design, back in 2011 with a single project in upstate New York. Since then, she's grown what was then a huge leap of faith into a full-fledged design studio working on residential, commercial office and public spaces from New York to California. We recently caught up with Fauzia to learn more about what it's been like to go out on her own in such competitive city, the challenges of being a female minority architect in world being designed by men, and how taking a "reflective design" approach can really improve a space.

Though we tend to focus on larger than life luxury apartments, we've certainly come to love the creative tenacity that comes with living small. Our latest gem comes from Foz Design, led by Fauzia Khanani, who worked to renovate this 500-square-foot pied-à-terre for a Dutch composer and Manhattanite journalist. Located in a pre-war, landmarked building in the heart of Chelsea, Foz managed to create a glamorous modern home with plenty of old world charm.
